Traders, drivers at Kejetia market to be moved soon

Traders and Drivers of the Kejetia Market in Kumasi will soon be moved to Race Course near the Kejetia Market, to make way for the reconstruction of the Kejetia-Central Market project.

Earlier this month Traders at the Kejetia bus terminal staged a demonstration against the mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Kojo Bonsu.

The traders were asking the mayor to exclude the bus terminal from the reconstruction of the Central Market.

 The Kumasi Kejetia-Central Market project,  will have over 43,000 stalls with a lorry terminal and is expected to be the biggest open market in West Africa. According to engineers the project will be completed within the next two years.

The Chief Executive of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Kojo Bonsu on tour to the relocation site at Race Course, assured the Kejetia Market traders, that, plans are far advanced for a compensation plan.

Speaking to Citi News ,the Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu emphasisied, “every trader and every business person who does business at Kejetia is going to be relocated and compensated. I am assuring you that we are going to stick to our words and make sure that we do this as a government. There were agitation from traders and drivers that there is no place for us to relocate you but this site I am inspecting today is an indication that you all will surely be relocated.”
