The Member of Parliament for Damongo, Adam Mutawakilu wants the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to sanction the Northern Region Minister Mohammed Muniru Limina for violating the party’s constitution.
The Minister has declared his intentions of contesting for the Damango seat in the 2016 elections and has started his campaigns but Adam Mutawakilu believes his decision is unconstitutional.
[contextly_sidebar id=”NvFlVllv5WGdAhVYFNNf7f62IzQLVtMN”]Mutawakilu accused him of breaching Article 43 of the constitution and “the directives by the Regional Chairman that that no potential candidate should start campaigning until nominations are open.”
The incumbent MP believes the Minister’s actions could influence others to follow his example.
“I thought that being the first gentleman of the region, he will be the last to flout that directive but he happens to be the first and therefore he is likely to open the floodgates for others to come in and that could be disastrous for the party in the Northern Region.”
He pointed out that the Minister, apart from breaching the constitution had also deceived residents in the region that the President encouraged him to contest for the seat in the 2016 elections.
He however dismissed such reports saying “We all know in Damongo that it is blatant lie because that was the same thing he said in 2012 and the office of the President clarified the issue and provided a level plain field for us to contest”
Speaking to Citi News, the NDC MP asked the party to stop the Regional Minister from campaigning and call him to order since nominations are not yet opened.
“. ..I think it is time we have patience. I want them to call him to book. I want them to draw his attention that he has flouted the constitution and the directives of the regional chairman and therefore halt all campaign activities till the appropriate time then we go in to contest.”
