The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region is hoping to convince the family of the late regional chairman to allow the deceased be buried on Saturday.
[contextly_sidebar id=”IXYDgDSli0JEU7sCITaYgiXFHaeMXPtQ”]Citi News’ regional correspondent, Fred Awuni reported that since the late Adam Mahama was a Muslim, he is expected to be buried within 24 to 48 hours after his death but an emergency meeting will be held this morning to deliberate over a possible extension.
Adam Mahama was attacked by some two persons who poured acid on him late Wednesday resulting in his subsequent death on Thursday.
The party’s flagbearer who was on a 16-day tour in Europe has announced he is returning to Ghana following the incident.
His running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is also scheduled to fly to Bolgatanga to sympathize with the family and observe the final funeral rites.
Adam Mahama had four children with his wife, Hajia Zinabu Adam and according to Awuni, three of them who are schooling in Accra have been flown back to Bolga to be with the family.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Fred Awuni reported that a pathologist from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra; Dr. Adusei was flown in on Thursday to conduct an autopsy on the deceased.
Arrested suspect brought to Accra
Fred Awuni also reported that one of the suspect who has been arrested has been flown to Accra for further investigations.
According to him, the Police say the name of the suspect will be released once the second suspect who is at large is apprehended.
“The suspect who was picked up has been sent to Accra for further investigations. Though his name has been withheld, they say that there is also another suspect who is at large and the Police want to arrest that person before they will disclose their names,” he reported.
He admitted there are reports making rounds that the younger brother of the party’s national chairman, Paul Afoko is the arrested suspect but Awuni stressed that there has been no confirmation whether indeed Gregory Afoko is the suspect.
“For now, I cannot confirm that because the Police is not willing to give us the name of this particular suspect so we can find out whether or not he is indeed the brother of Paul Afoko as being reported.”
Security
Fred Awuni also reported that there is heavy security presence in the region especially at the mortuary, the residence of the late Adam Mahama, the regional office and other vantage points.
“At the mortuary, there is intense joint security – we have the military and the Police and we have some members of the party here waiting for the outcome of the autopsy. Although the regional party office was empty, there is heavy Police presence.”
