Minister of Employment and Labour Relations has described as “misplaced” a strike by workers of the Agricultural Development Bank (adb).
Staff of the bank on Thursday begun a nationwide sit down strike action masterminded by the Union of Industry Commerce and Finance (UNICOF).
[contextly_sidebar id=”rAOCsd1jaN6vDXSU5dAJAYekHa0dHdvM”]The sit down strike is to demand the removal of the Managing Director of adb, Stephen Kpordzih and the dissolution of the bank’s Board.
They say their call is to enable the Bank of Ghana conduct investigations into allegations of financial malfeasance leveled against the MD and the board.
Though management of adb had issued a statement assuring customers that all of its branches are opened and operating, Citi News checks revealed that some of the branches across the country are not working.
Speaking to Citi News, Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu insisted that the workers argument to support the strike are not only misplaced but also “misinformed.”
Haruna Iddrisu lamented that, he met with the leadership of the staff on Wednesday and had later scheduled another meeting on Tuesday, June 2, adding that “at no point yesterday did they give an indication that they will embark on this course of action.”
“Therefore I’m naturally disappointed but equally surprised, even more worried and concerned that they are attributing their actions to have been premised by a purported letter extending the contract of the MD by two years; which action they conceive of as action by government acting in bad faith.”
He noted that government was not aware of any such letter and challenged the adb workers to “produce evidence of that said letter warranting and extending that contract [of the MD].”
He however appealed to the workers to rescind their decision and return to work.
