Following the recent jailbreaks that have hit the Police service, the Accra Regional Police Command have begun the installation of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at the cells in their quest to bolster security.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer at the Accra Regional Police Command ASP Effia Tenge said the installation of the cameras formed part of the command’s programme to bolster security across the region with technology.
“It is a programme that is ongoing and we have begun here. Some of the stations have been fixed with CCTV cameras. It will replicated at other stations,” she said.
Apart from the installation of cameras, ASP Effia Tenge told Citi News that at least one armed guard will be placed at each Police cell 24 hours each day.
This she explained, would ensure that the cells are well guarded to prevent any cell break.
“We also have provided armed personnel who complement the duties of counter officers both day and night to ensure that inmates who may think of escape give up on such thoughts,” she said.
Some cell inmates have escaped from Police cells over the past three months.
In November 2014 four murder suspects escaped from custody at the Suame Divisional Command.
However, in February this year, there was an attempted jail break at the Kumasi Central Prisons after a fire scare.
This was later followed by a cell break at Denu in the Volta Region where seven suspects escaped but the Police have been able to re-arrest the three.
Two suspects also escaped from Police cells in Tepa, in the Ashanti Region about a week ago.
