A retired Police Superintendent Paul Avuyi has attributed the numerous Police recruitment scams in the Ghana Service to what he describes as the “protocol system”.
“The emergence of interference in the Police recruitment by way of protocol enlistment have also added to the abuses in the process. That is why we find ourselves in this situation,” the Retired Superintendent told Eyewitness News Host, Richard Dela Sky.
[contextly_sidebar id=”9JDMSOiboJqaTU6V00CoegsbdELnHzfJ”]Last week, hundreds of men and women arrived at five police training depots for enlistments into the Ghana Police Service but they were turned away after it was discovered that the enlistment was a scam and their recruitment letters were fake.
The Interior Ministry together with the Ghana Police Administration launched investigations into the matter and mounted an intensive search for the culprits.
So far, about 12 persons including two Police officers are in the grips of the Police.
Speaking on the scandal, Avuyi said that though recruitment in the “early 90’s was transparent” the process has been corrupted by some officials at the Police Service in recent times.
Expose corrupt officials
Avuyi therefore called on the Police Administration to tackle the problem by exposing corrupt officials at the Service.
“The issue has to do with leadership because the IGP is only one person and at all levels she has officers who are in leadership positions who give some of these information know what is happening but the courage to talk about these things have not been happening over the years”
He remarked that many Ghanaians involved in the scam are also not willing to expose these corrupt officials.
“If we have the law which spells out the rules and regulations, I dont think that all these would have been happening,” he further noted.
A top police officer COP Patrick Timbillah was recently interdicted and put under house arrest for his alleged role in the recent scam.
