Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan will on Thursday, March 5, 2015 appear before Parliament to answer questions on the suspension of the much publicized District Assembly and Unit Committee Elections.

[contextly_sidebar id=”yxfgRcAaCnJlZBJM0XJuqGxcpmy1Anim”]Members of Parliament on Tuesday insisted that Dr Afari Gyan should be summoned before the House to brief them on plans for the new elections.

The Supreme Court described the processes of the assembly election as “unconstitutional” stating that the election had no Constitutional Instrument backing it and further ordered the EC to cancel the Elections and start all over again.

The court made the ruling after Benjamin Eyi Mensah, a fisherman sued the EC for preventing  him from filing his nomination to contest in the Eyipeh Electoral Area despite fulfilling all the requirements.

The EC in a press release announced that it had postponed the elections and said it is working on a new Constitutional Instrument.

Parliament has also summoned the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development as well as the Ministry of Finance to appear before it.

In a related development, a pressure group, Movement for Change is calling on government to prosecute Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan and his deputies for causing financial loss to the state.

They believe negligence on the part of the Electoral Commissioner led to the cancellation of the District Assembly Election.
