President John Dramani Mahama has said the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will do everything possible to ensure that Nigeria’s upcoming elections are successfully held.
President Mahama ,who is also the Chiarman of ECOWAS said this when he met with the Chairman of the INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega and his team to discuss the state of their preparedness for the March 28 elections.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Gj9YDzOgaVMot7sscKJF7tAH8NNCjjtW”]He described the upcoming election as “critical” adding that “it will be one more indication to the world that Nigeria is a democratic country ruled by the tenets of good governance and the rule of law.”
Nigeria’s election which was scheduled for February 14th was postponed to March 28th due to the security reasons.
The Nigerian Electoral Commission, said the postponement will give a newly-formed multinational force, the opportunity to reclaim areas controlled by Boko Haram.
However speaking on the postponement, Mahama expressed the hope that there “will be no post election violence and all the parties involved in this election will accept the results in good faith when INEC announces them.”
Mahama believes that the postponement has also given INEC much more time to be able to complete all its processes and be in readiness to ensure that voters are not “disenfranchised and the results of the elections are accepted.”
He said ECOWAS had received several monitoring reports from various quarters and is working together with the electoral commissions of various countries to ensure that “obstacles to free and fair elections are removed”
