The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to put mire focus on the local football leagues in order to help groom more talents for the various national teams.
The President said this when he delivered the State of the Nation address to Parliament on Thursday in Accra.
Speaking on sports, President Mahama said the nation’s football regulators should do more for the local football league.
“The seeming total neglect of our local league is a matter of concern to football-loving fans. I wish to urge the Ghana Football Association to turn its attention to improving the quality of our local league and work towards making it more attractive and worth following.”
The local football league has faced financial challenges in the past few years and even the league experienced a period of not having a sponsor for a large part of the 2013/2014 league season until First Capital Plus Premier League took up the position of headline sponsor.
In February, the Division One League got a sponsorship package from GN Bank and it is expected that the financial injection will help improve development at the base of the local game.
