An Accra Central Magistrate Court has ordered the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to grant access to lawyer of eight suspected pirates in their custody.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Mc5s7ZFUsD9WxTdhNLzw0ri2Q9ssqw1p”]The order was made after lawyer for the suspected pirates, Uche Nwosu told the court the BNI failed to honor their promise to allow him meet his clients after the last sitting of the court.
The eight suspected Nigerians pirates were arrested on the January 18, 2015 by the Ghana Navy upon a tip off for allegedly seizing a vessel carrying huge of amount of oil.
Ghanaian Security Services say the pirates managed to transfer the ship’s cargo into another vessel before their arrest. The vessel, MV Mariam, was carrying about 1,500 tonnes of crude oil at the time it was hijacked.
The pirates reportedly turned the vessel around and entered the territorial waters of Ghana but were arrested upon a tip off.
The eight have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and piracy.
