Cote d’Ivoire’s Yaya Toure was named Africa’s Best Player for the fourth time at the Glo CAF Awards held in Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday.
The Manchester City player beat Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nigeria’s Vincent Enyeama to the top award and afterwards, said the honour had added to a life that had been “blessed by Allah” and thanked the Confederation of African Football, football fans and the entire continent for the honour.
Toure was part of Manchester City’s title-winning team of the 2013/2014 English season and helped his country to the 2014 World Cup even though the Elephants failed to make it out of a group that had Japan, Greece and Colombia.
Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan and Kwadwo Asamoah were named in the continent’s Best Eleven that also included Ahmed Musa and Aubameyang.
Other award winners on the night were the Desert Foxes of Algeria for excelling at the 2014 World Cup and Nigeria’s Super Falcons for winning the African Women’s Championships.
The two national teams were the male and female national teams of the year respectively.
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala won the Youth Player Of The Year and the Best Women’s Player Of The year.
Algeria’s Yacine Brahimi won the Most Promising Talent while Kheireddine Madoui was the continent’s Best Coach. He managed Algeria’s Entente Setif to win the CAF Champions League and that feat gave them the Club of The Year.
Firmin Mubule Ndomede of AS Vita was the Best Player In Africa and Gambia’s Papa Bakary Gassama was the Referee of the Year.
CAF’s Platinum Award went to GFA boss, Kwesi Nyantakyi and Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
