The National Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Alhaji Yaw Manu, has denied reports that he has been relieved of his post.
“Nobody has sacked me. I am still the national chairman of GPRTU,” Alhaji Manu insisted in an interviview with Citi News.
In a press release copied to citifmonline.com on Saturday, the Transport Union announced that four of its national executives, Alhaji Yaw Manu (Kumasi), Kwame Kumah (Cape Coast), Benjamin Kwesi Ansah (Takoradi), and Stephen K. Okudzeto (Acccra) had been fired following their alleged convictions in various crimes.
[contextly_sidebar id=”79PPaQCsgk0hvcGt8Dddb7V9JK13uK4s”]According to the union per Article 13(h) of the Union’s laws, “any member who has been convicted on criminal offense shall be disqualified from contesting election. If the fact of the criminality is established after election, such person(s) shall automatically be removed from office and a report made to the appropriate level of authority.”
The four were reportedly sentenced to one day in prison with a cost of GHc1, 000 by a Sekondi court in the Western Region presided over by his Lordship Justice Nicholas C. A. Agbevor.
However Alhaji Manu denies the claim that he was convicted saying: “I don’t have any criminal record. I have never been in prison any where.”
According to him, the allegations that had been leveled against him had been made up by opponents to tarnish his image.
“All the people talking, they are all opposition against [me]. They contested in the 2011 polls [against me] and they lost. Since then they have been putting all kinds pressure and saying so many things against me,” he said.
Alhaji said that a meeting had been convened for Tuesday to address the situation.
