President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the people of Bimbilla, Bawku, Alavanyo and other conflict prone areas to bury their differences and make sure peace prevail.
He said conflicts and chieftaincy disputes only damage lives and properties and hinder development.
Dagbon, Bawku, Nkonya and Alavanyo have had curfew imposed on their communities for months as a result of various ethnic and chieftaincy disputes.
[contextly_sidebar id=”n8VjeA3cnkgqGEC9TfyoHXDtF9i0WMCq”]Several other measures had been put in place to address the security concerns in the area with the government and the National Security Council announcing in August that residents were to surrender their guns for cash.
However, as at September 6, only two people had surrendered their weapons to the security agencies, according to the police in Bawku.
President Mahama who spoke at this years Odwira Festival celebration at Akropong commended the people of Okuapeman for ending their long-standing dispute and assured them that he will help to maintain the peace and unity in the area.
He appealed to the people of Dagbon, Bawku, Nkonya and Alavanyo to use the re-unification of the people of Okuapeman as a model for peace and unity in the their various areas.
The President congratulated Oseadeayo Addo Dankwa, Okuapehene, for helping to maintain peace in the area for over forty years.
The programme was also attended by former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, 2012 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party.
