Embattled Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore has stepped down, an army spokesperson has said.
The army spokesperson according to the BBC, told the crowd gathered in front of the army headquarters on Friday that Mr Compaore had left office.
According to the Agence France-Presse (AFP), there were cheers and jubilation from the crowd after the announcement.
Blaise Compaore on Thursday said he would serve the rest of his tenure which officially ends in November 2015 and promised not to contest again.
But the opposition and the protesters rejected his proposition until the latest development.
Blaise Compaore is reportedly calling for fresh elections in the next three months.
Meanwhile, Reuters news agency has reported that a heavily armed convoy believed to be carrying Mr Compaore was travelling towards the southern town of Po and could be heading for Ghana.
