The youth in Nkanfoa in the Cape coast in the Central Region have demonstrated against the Municipal Assembly over the location of a landfill site in the area.
According to them, the landfill site has contributed to the increasing number of cholera–related deaths in the area.
Some of the demonstrators told to Citi News’ Central Regional correspondent, Kwamena Bamfo Adjei that they will prevent any refuse truck from offloading its waste at the site until the issue is resolved.
“We Nkanfoa people have decided not to allow them to dump the refuse there. They don’t fumigate it. We started cleaning our environment since the cholera outbreak, but we have realized that the problem still persist and we think it is coming from the landfill site. We can’t stand it, they must do something,” they demanded.

“We will continue with the demonstration till we hear something better,” they indicated.
Meanwhile, the Information Officer of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly who was at the demonstration scene said: “It has gotten to our attention that the people of Nkanfoa have some concerns concerning the final disposal site where we dump our waste in the metropolis.”
He added that; “The Concerns are primarily to do with the way Zoomlion which is responsible for dumping waste have managed the landfill site as at now. One of the main concerns is that the tip loaders instead of driving to the exact landfill site, dump the waste at the edges and it has created a mess.”
He however assured that work would be expedited on the landfill site to halt the cholera menace.
“A bulldozer will come to push the waste to its proper location, and then also spray the site which, according to the community is not done regularly.”
Over 10,000 cases of Cholera have been recorded so far across the country and government is seeking support from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
