The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho, has unveiled a Mausoleum at Weta in the Volta Region to commemorate the first anniversary of the demise of one of Ghana’s astute writers, Prof Kofi Awoonor.
The Mausoleum, according to Doe Adjaho, was part of initiatives being taken by the family of the late Professor to keep his beliefs and ideologies alive in order to inspire the current and future generations.
One of his children, Sika Awoonor told Citi News, the Mausoleum forms part a future plan of converting their father’s residence in Weta into an Art Centre where writers across the world could move away from the buzzing cities to have retreats.
An educational endowment fund was also instituted for the traditional area where beneficiary needy but brilliant students will be sponsored throughout their education.

Awoonor, a former chairman of the Council of State was among the 67 individuals who met their untimely death during the incident.
His memorial service which exhibited an undiluted African cultural dexterity was attended by top government officials and culture purist across the world.
Notable among them were the Chief of Staff, Prosper Douglas Kweku Bani, Chairperson of the Council of State, Cecilia Johnson and Deputy Minister For Defence, Alex Segbefia.
The rest were close relatives and friends including, Professor Kofi Anyidoho and Victor Gbeho who all took turns to eulogize the late Professor Kofi Awoonor.
