Two persons have been confirmed dead in a gory accident in the Tolon district of the Northern Region.
About 90 casualties with children being the majority are on admission at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
District Chief Executive for Tolon, Seidu Abukari narrated that the accident happened at Lingbunga when a mummy truck on which the traders were travelling with veered off the road.
He identified the deceased as a 45 year old Fulani man and 25 year old Baba Alhassan.
According to the DCE, the victims were from Gbanjogla enroute to Katinga market.
He attributed the accident to reckless driving and charged police in the area to be extra vigilant and arrest drivers who flout the law with impunity.
Mr. Seidu Abukari cautioned drivers in the area against using heavy trucks meant for carrying goods for carrying people.
Personnel of the Tamale Teaching Hospital were overstretched by the casualties.
Deputy Director in charge of Nursing Services at the Accidents and Emergency Unit of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Madam Mariama Konadu told Citi News the situation was under control.
She hinted that some of the victims were in critical condition but gave the assurance that majority of them will be treated and discharged.
Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Ahmed Farid said the hospital had enough facilities to contain the situation.
He added that arrangements were being made to increase the numerical strength of the personnel on duty.
Hundreds of people flooded the Tamale Teaching Hospital in search of their relatives among the victims.
Security personnel at the main entrance to the Accidents and Emergency Unit found it difficult controlling them as some attempted bulldozing their way inside.
Some of the victims lied on the bare floor receiving treatment.
