The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has started a free registration exercise for inmates of the country’s psychiatric hospitals.
The initiative forms part of a programme to ensure that vulnerable people in the society have access to quality healthcare.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA in-charge of Administration and Human Resource, Edward Nunoo, told journalists in Accra that the exercise should have begun with 750 patients of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital yesterday but was called off because of the rains in the capital.
Mr Nunoo said the authority had deployed personnel and equipment for the exercise and explained that the membership of inmates who had already been registered would be renewed.
“We believe that the vulnerable people in the society need free and quality healthcare just like other citizens,” he stressed.
He said after the registration exercise in Accra, patients at the Ankaful and Pantang hospitals would have their turn.
He urged the various hospitals to co-operate with the NHIA personnel to make the programme a success.
