The District Chief Executive of Nkoranza North, Kojo Adjei Dumor is appealing to residents in the area to accept their former Member of Parliament, Eric Amoateng back into their fold after serving the jail term in the United States for drug trafficking.
He appealed saying, “I am not endorsing what he did, we all condemn that but now he has been punished for whatever he did so now that he has finished serving his term, he is a free man so we should accept him.”
The ex-Nkoranza North Member of Parliament, Eric Amoateng was arrested on December 11, 2005 for illegal possession of 136 pounds of heroin with the street value of about $6 million.
He was the sentenced to a 10-year jail term by a US court presided over by Judge David G. Tragger on December 12, 2007.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Dumor recalled that Mr. Amoateng assisted a lot of the residents in the constituency before he became a Member of Parliament.
“He did his best before he was arrested…people loved him, people liked him, he was a prominent personality and unfortunately, he was arrested,” he said.
Mr. Dumor indicated that his arrest came as a shock to his constituents but he is still respected in the area.
He explained that “whatever has happened, we cannot reject him. He is our son, he is a true son of the land, we should be happy he is in town, we should be happy is healthy.”
The Nkoranza North DCE described Mr. Amoateng’s arrival in Ghana as “welcoming news, he was our Member of Parliament and he was even once a chief so if he’s been kept for so long a time and by the grace of God he has touched down, then we should be grateful.”
He however clarified that no durbar is being planned to welcome him back home and neither is he in the know of any such plans by any individual or group.
He appealed to Ghanaians and residents in the area to “make him feel at home because whatever has happened, we cannot, we cannot reject our own blood.”
