The President of IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe, has lamented what he described as the “last minute attitude” adopted by city authorities and government in dealing with the cholera outbreak.
He attributed the recurring cholera outbreaks in Ghana to poor planning and the lack of foresight by successive governments.
“The way we do our things, where we wait till the last minute, even if you were not prepared, you knew it was a cyclical thing and you would have thought that people will have had the mind to plan ahead,” he remarked.
The cholera outbreak in the Greater Accra and Central regions, has recorded over 5,000 cases and 45 deaths since July.
Hospitals in the Metropolis are overstretched due to the number of cases being reported daily.
Cudjoe questioned government’s preparedness for an Ebola outbreak in Ghana.
According to him, government’s inability to effectively handle the outbreak of cholera should be a source of worry to Ghanaians since the Ebola disease is deadlier.
“You can’t even deal with cholera and you are hoping to deal with Ebola. It is a systemic issue,” he said.
