The Ashanti Regional command of the Ghana Police Service says it will ensure that shops belonging to Nigerian retailers that were locked up on Monday are re-opened.
Members of the Suame Spare Parts Dealers Association locked up shops belonging to Nigerian retailers on Monday July 14, 2014 accusing them of trading in retail spaces reserved for Ghanaians.
The PRO of the Ashanti regional police command, ASP Yussif Tanko informed Citi News that they had the situation under control.
He said, “we held a meeting with them and made them understand that it is not lawful to close the shops of those whom they think were infringing on the law.”
“We told them to open the shops for the people to continue with their activities till such a time that the issue will be resolved according to law. Tomorrow we will be going to find out whether they opened those shops or not.”
On his part the Chairman of the Spare Parts Dealers, Association Kwame Brenyah says they have agreed to pursue the matter legally.
As such, he is calling on the Trade Ministry to clamp down on these foreign retailers.
