Six people were killed when a Hyundai mini-bus on which they were travelling collided head-on with a Burkina Faso-bound articulator truck loaded with tonnes of heavy mining equipment at Odumase, in the Asante-Akim Central Municipality.
Seven other passengers suffered broken bones and cuts, two of them were said to be in critical conditions, and had to be rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), a major referral facility in Kumasi.
The remaining are on admission at the Konongo-Odumase and Agogo Presbyterian Hospitals.
Only one of the deceased, the driver of the bus, Kwaku Duah, has been identified.
The bodies of the rest, three men and two women, had been deposited at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital morgue.
The crash happened at about 1030 hours on Tuesday, drawing a large crowd of people to the place – a mangled scene of horror, and many could not hold back their tears.
According to eye witnesses, the driver of the bus attempted to pass a line of vehicles, and in the process crashed into the truck.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Edward Osei, the Konongo Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), said they received a distress call and immediately responded to rescue the injured and to remove the dead.
DSP Osei told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that five of the people died on the spot, and one later, at the Konongo-Odumase Government Hospital.
He said the police together with personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and other rescuers, had a hectic time cutting through the wreckage.
