The 10 Regional Chairmen of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have decided to convene regional conferences to elect new representatives for the National Council.

The decision follows a writ filed in court challenging the composition of the National Council on the basis that the regional representatives were not elected as prescribed by the Constitution of the NPP.

A statement issued by the Upper West Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama indicated that the elections will take place this weekend to ensure that peace prevails in the party.

Speaking to Citi News Mr. Mahama said the decision to reelect new executives will cease internal wrangling in the party.

Below is the full statement issued by the party

NPP REGIONAL CHAIRMEN TO ORGANISE REGIONAL DELEGATES’ CONFERENCE TO ELECT NATIONAL COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES

The ten regional chairmen of the New Patriotic Party have taken note of the writ filed in court challenging the composition of the National Council, on the basis that the regional representatives were not elected as prescribed by the Constitution of the NPP.

It should be noted that since the formation of the NPP in 1992, National Council representatives from the regions have always been appointed after due consultation and this convention has become established in the party.

This notwithstanding, it is apparent that the writ filed in court challenging the composition of the National Council is a calculated attempt to disrupt the forward march of the NPP to the Jubilee House in 2016.

To avoid this and to ensure peace in the party, the ten regional chairmen have decided to convene a regional delegates’ conference for each region to elect their representatives to the National Council. The elections will take place on the 29th of June 2014 across the country.
