A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Brong-Ahafo Region, on Tuesday called on the Council of Elders of the party to unite the feuding factions in the party.
Mr Frank Opoku Adjapong noted that the perceived factions within the NPP is getting to alarming proportions, and if immediate steps are not taken to address them, it would cause the NPP dearly in the 2016 general elections.
Mr Adjapong emphasized that the leadership of the party ought to re-think and strategize well, to be able to position the party in a way that would not ward off floating voters.
He observed that even though every political party has its weakness and internal problems, the current situation in the NPP, as the major opposition party, is not the best, and something ought to be done in the interest of all members.
Mr Adjapong stressed that all candidates contesting to lead the party in 2016 general elections ought to be given equal opportunities to campaign and market themselves well before the National Delegates Congress.
He advised leadership of the party not to create any impression of supporting a particular candidate, as that would not augur well, if the party was bent on winning the 2016 election.
“At this crucial moment, we don’t just need a flagbearer to lead us in 2016, but we need a winnable candidate,” he said, and called on the leadership of the party to open up to all members, strengthen internal structures and accept new ideas, to enhance the party’s fortunes.
Mr Adjapong observed that the internal trading of insults, accusations and counter accusations, and petty squabbles ought to be nipped in the bud, and advised candidates contesting for the flagbearership and their followers to avoid tendencies that would create enmity and disunity in the party.
