The Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President John Dramani Mahama says there is an urgent need to form a global alliance to confront terrorism.

He said he is optimistic that the support of ECOWAS can deal with the Boko Haram menace in Nigeria.

“Terrorism affects the whole world no matter where it is. It is a threat to the whole of the world, not just to the people who live in that particular area, and we no one country has all the solutions to be able to fight terrorism so we need to form global alliance to confront the threat of terrorism,” he said.

It’s been over two months since Islamist terrorist group; Boko Haram kidnapped over 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria.

The terror group has also undertaken several bomb attacks in Nigeria killing at thousands of people.

Several countries have pitched in to help locate the whereabout of the girls and meetings have as well been held to find the most effective strategies in combating the activities of Boko Haram in the sub-region.

President Mahama has indicated that he is appreciative of the support Nigeria has received from countries such as Israel, United States of America, United Kingdom and France in the fight against Boko Haram.

He described the emergency ECOWAS meeting which was held in Accra about three weeks ago to discuss the new threat of terrorism as useful.

President Mahama expressed the wish of ECOWAS “to cooperate with all our international friends and partners in terms of fighting the current threat that we face.”
