A Lecturer at Ashesi University, Dr. Lloyd Amoah has emphasized the need for Ghanaians to mount pressure on Authorities to tackle Ghana’s waste management problems.
Dr. Amoah is also calling for a civil protest to form the basis for crystallization of efforts to get government and other state institutions concerned, to act and collect garbage dispersed across the country.
Refuse generated by residents have not been collected for sometime now.
Although residents have asked the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to call the refuse collection companies to order, the problem is still lingering.
Mr. Okoe Vanderpuije in that regard has stated that the Kpone site is currently the only appropriate landfill site for dumping of refuse.
The Kpone Landfill site is however, operating below capacity due to frequent electricity power cuts, making the waste management process cumbersome.
Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Amoah described the problem as a painful situation.
“Accra is the heartbeat of Africa in many ways so it is very painful that we are having such a situation.”
“For us who live here it is important to show to the authorities that this situation is very difficult to take. The problem doesn’t reflect in anyway that taxes are being used for the purposes for which they are taken,” Mr. Amoah added.
In that regard, he stressed the need for citizens of the country to show concern by letting authorities know that Ghanaians are not happy with what is going on.
“There could be a threat of an epidemic, ….we therefore need to make our concerns known,” he noted.
