Ghanaian forward Abdul Majeed Warris scored his 9th goal of the season in Valenciennes’ 2-1 loss to Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday.
The on-loan player pulled Valenciennes level in the 66th minute with a goal after dribbling past Bisevac and shooting past Les Gones goalie Anthony Lopes.
However, former champions Lyon scored the second goal of the day in the 69th minute to leave Valenciennes on 18th position with 29 points.
Warris had the opportunity to level the score for his team, but his 87th minute penalty kick was brilliantly saved by Lopes.
Meanwhile, another Ghanaian player, Jordan Ayew, was on the scoresheet for Sochaux in their 2-2 draw with Bastia.
Ayew’s 45th minute strike opened the scoreline for Sochaux and his team-mate Sebastian Corchia doubled it but goals from Gianni Bruno and Djibril Cisse foiled Sochaux’s bid to win and ease their relegation worries.
They remain 19th on the league log with 27 points.
Jordan’s older brother, Andre, also scored, but he was on the winning side as Marseille beat AC Ajaccio 3-1 at the Stade Velodrome on Friday.
Ayew grabbed a hat-trick for Les Phoceens as they won their first match in five attempts to push them up to 6th on 51 points ahead of trip to Montpellier in the next round of matches.
