The Ghana Police Service has indicated it will start publishing in the newspapers, the names of people who are arrested for violating the fishing laws at regular intervals.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Cephas Arthur, this exercise will deter others from using illegal fishing equipment.
The Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police arrested 12 persons for fishing with illegal equipment.
A total of 17 generators and 36 lighting bulbs attached to long cables were retrieved from the suspects.
In an interview with Citi News, DSP Arthur explained that although some persons have been arrested, “we have to establish the fact; we have to gather enough evidence to establish the facts so that we can put them before court.”
He mentioned that light fishing is illegal in Ghana “so whoever engages in it has committed an offense and therefore must be brought to book because it has severe consequences on aquatic life.”
