The incumbent national chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Obetsebi Lamptey has rubbished calls for him not to seek re-election due to under-performance.
The Suhum Legislator, Frederick Opare Ansah is advocating against the retention of Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey as the national chairman of the party because he together with the national executives largely contributed to the failure of the party to retain power in 2008 and win the 2012 elections.
“They failed him [Nana Akufo-Addo] and we will not allow them to fail another presidential candidate; be it Nana Addo or somebody else,” said Mr Ansah.
In a sharp rebuttal on Eyewitness News, Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey said the national executives cannot be entirely blamed for NPP’s loss because “at the end of the day, all elections are local, they are handled at the constituency level.”
He accused the Suhum MP of equally being responsible for the failure of the NPP to maintain its majority in his constituency.
“He was the campaign manager in his constituency…why is this campaign manager, who has managed to drop our majority in his constituency down from several thousands to a few hundreds now talking and pointing fingers at other people?” he asked.
The NPP national chairman aspirant noted that it is high time for individuals in the party to stop pointing accusing fingers “and start seeing that every time you point one finger, three points back at you.”
The NPP is scheduled to have its national delegates’ conference in Tamale on Saturday to elect new national executives to steer the affairs of the party ahead of the 2016 general elections.
