Right from the get-go, on Thursday afternoon, the atmosphere of the Zenith University College’s auditorium was saturated with intense intellect and genuine passion, as participants of the Citi FM Inter-University Debate shot their opinions across the room, in a warm-up open debate.
Then the battle lines were drawn with the host, Zenith University College, having been pitched against the Central University College in the first of three heated debates. In the end, Zenith succeeded in convincing the judges that the death penalty is not the answer to solving corruption and they won the first round.
Next up was a bout between Regent University College and the Pentecost University College, during which the two sides toiled at arriving at a conclusion, as to whether or not a Western-style democracy can lead Ghanaians towards the level of development that they need. Pentecost University College asserted that this was impossible and their efforts were crowned with victory.
Then a question arose, compelling everyone in the Zenith auditorium to ponder over the possibility that Ghana could have been a haven of development and systemic strength, if only independence had never come to plague Ghanaians.
However, in this third and final round of debate, it was the Ashesi University College that tilted the scales, beating the Islamic University College by a single point, thus making Ashesi’s argument that Ghana is better off in independence a stance that was worth their while.
This was the maiden edition of the Citi FM Inter-University Debate, which is set to become a regular engagement for Ghana’s private universities. This shall be in a bid to engage the minds of young people, while providing a platform upon which they can air their views and concerns about the country and suggest possible solutions.
The quality of intellect, the level of passion and diligence as well as the state of awareness, which the students displayed, are sure signs of a bright future for Ghana.
