Labour Unions in the transportation sector are soon expected to organize themselves into a one unified body.
This latest development comes on the back of moves by the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to revamp its local chapter, the Ghana National Coordinating Council of the ITF.
The unified body will be made up of Maritime and Dockers Union, Rail and Allied Transport Workers Union, National Union of Seamen among other unions.
ITF’s Africa Regional Secretary, Joseph Kevin Katende speaking to Citi News said the re-organization will help improve transportation system in Ghana.
He revealed that the various transport unions have taken practical steps to re-organize themselves and when the new union is formed, it will “give them a unified voice in engaging government on transport policy development matters.”
Mr. Katende was optimistic that “tripartism will now be cascaded from Ministry level to the individual sector specific levels of transport” which will yield a more meaningful and peaceful environment for smooth operations.
