Some Members of Parliament (MP) are asking for the Ghana Police Service to provide personal security for all 275 members of the House and increased protection for Ghanaians.
During proceedings on Monday, the MPs expressed concern over the recent spate of armed robbery cases and killings which some believe are contract killings.
There has been an increase in the number of reported killings and armed robberies. Some have alleged that a number of recent of killings across the country were contract killings.
Citi News’ Parliamentary correspondent, Richard Dela Sky reported that MPs are worried that “we are having far too many contract killings as some have put it in the country, more so, which are going unattended to; in other words, the Police so far have been unable to find the perpetrators.”
The MPs also claimed that the situation is creating a state of panic among citizens therefore, it is imperative for the Police to be adequately resourced.”
According to Sky, the MPs “are clearly talking about themselves and the fact that a number of MPs have been attacked over the past couple of months.”
Some Legislators who have been attacked include former Majority Chief Whip, Gershon K.B. Gbediame and the MP for Akan Constituency, Joseph Kwadwo Ofori “so the MPs are pressing for personal security.”
The MPs are of the opinion that they have become targets for criminals who believe they have properties and money in their homes.
Sky however clarified that “they are not only talking about themselves getting police protection but they are also saying that there is need for the general public to also feel safe.”
