A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Brong Ahafo region, Nana Obiri Boahene has openly declared his support for Mr. Paul Afoko who is campaigning to become the party’s next national Chairman.
Despite the suspension of Mr. Afoko’s vetting by the committee, Nana Obiri Boahene is optimistic that Paul Afoko will serve as the best NPP national Chairman if elected by the delegates.
He told the New Statesman that the brouhaha associated with Mr. Afoko’s candidature will give him sympathy votes.
“With what is happening now on daily basis as I am monitoring events Afoko is gaining popularity and his popularity is rising higher so my advice to him and his supporters is that they should not get worried at all.”
The former Minister of State at the Interior ministry under former President Kufour’s regime encouraged Mr. Afoko to remain focused and convince the delegates to massively vote for him at the NPP national delegates conference scheduled for April 12 in Tamale.
Nana Obiri Boahene however took a swipe at Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe who accused the NPP vetting committee of operating on tribal lines.
“I am very much disturbed and worried about the comments of Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe; it was unfortunate, unfair, misplaced and preposterous.”
He therefore advised Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe to be mindful of his outburst in the media on issues concerning the NPP.
He gave the assurance that the vetting committee chaired by Mr. C.K Tedem who himself is a northerner will not witch-hunt Mr. Afoko.
“I believe that the vetting committee in their own wisdom decided that they deferred the vetting of Mr. Paul Afoko until such a time that the allegations leveled against him will be cleared.”
On who should lead the party in 2016, the astute lawyer approved Nana Akufo Addo’s come back.
He anticipated the NPP’s defeat in 2016 if Nana Akufo Addo whose track record according to Nana Obiri Boahene decides not to contest the Presidential primary and lead the party for the third time.
He described Nana Addo as an astute and a time tested politician whose track record is unmatched with any other Presidential hopeful in the NPP.
Nana Obiri Boahene posited that Nana Addo will win a landslide victory in 2016 to enable him implement his flagship free SHS and other pro-poor programs needed to alleviate the plight of the suffering masses.
