Israeli police pour bleach into food at Tel Aviv restaurant run by African migrants

pouringIsraeli police along with government health inspectors’ poured bleach into food at a Tel Aviv restaurant after the government concluded that the food is a public health hazard, according to a statement released by Israeli police.

Health inspectors poured bleach on the food that was cooking at a Sudanese restaurant located in the Neve Shaanan neighborhood of Tel Aviv, which is dominated by immigrant workers.

The operation was led by the Ministry of Health in cooperation with the Tel Aviv Police Department. The bleach was used in order to ensure the destruction of the food after inspectors determined that they could not be sure of the quality or origin of the meat, according to the police statement.

No complaint has ever been filed complaining about the quality of the food, and no one has suffered adverse effects from consuming the food in the restaurant which has been running for three years, according to several customers at the scene during the raid.

Aledain Abakar, a Sudanese man who was in restaurant during the raid said that the incident was very violent, painful and disturbing to watch.

Police destroyed more than 440 pounds of meat, poultry and fish, and more than 500 prepared dishes, Abakar said. “We told police that no one has gotten sick, and that even white people eat here,” Abakar said. The restaurant owner buys the meat from a Jewish man with a yarmulke, even though Sudanese are not required to keep kosher,” Abakar added.

“I can’t rush to judgement without all the facts, but the health inspectors made it clear that the food at the restaurant was a health hazard. The fact that it was bought from a Jew with a yarmulke does not automatically make it safe for consumption. Israel needs a vigilant Health Ministry due to the fact that many thousands of tourist frequent restaurants, and we don’t want these tourists getting food poisoning during their stay in Israel,” Jacob Fisher, 26, of Tel Aviv, Israel told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the restaurant raid.

A Health Ministry official responded to criticism by saying: “Would it have been more humane to eat meat that is not fit for consumption?”

The Ministry of Health issued a statement: “In order to protect public health, we decided to destroy the food.”
