The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is confident of retaining his position as the party goes to congress to elect national officers.

The NPP on Thursday concluded vetting of all 44 aspirants and a report is expected to be ready by next week.

Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Owusu Afriyie said he has sacrificed enough for the party and expects to be re-elected saying, “I have sacrificed for this party, I have fought for this party.”

According to him, “since becoming General Secretary, if there was any fly calling itself a mosquito, well, I have become the Sasso spray and we have sprayed that mosquito and to date, nobody could make those ugly noises in our ears.”

He pointed out that every situation demands a specific kind of leadership stating that “if you are in government, you would require the kind of general secretary who is the suit type, the smooth talker, the very good English speakers…you will need that kind of people.”

However, Mr. Owusu Afriyie indicated that a party in opposition like the NPP needs his kind of leadership as a general secretary because he has lived up to expectation and will continue to deliver if maintained.

He described an opposition party’s general secretary as a person who will “roll up his sleeves, get into the gutter and fight. And I am the one and not the others.”

Mr. Owusu Afriyie was optimistic he will win the national elections because “the grassroots love to see Sir John, they love what they hear and how I say things. It is my name that is in every household…my name is there because I am doing something good for my party.”
