The ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development says investigations into the supposed use of formalin by fisherfolks to preserve fish in the Central Region has proved negative.
There were reports last year that the fisherfolks preserved their fish with formalin, a preservative used to embalm dead bodies.
The news had massive impact on their businesses as many traders stopped buying fish from the Central Region.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture after launching investigations into the matter stated that tests that had been carried out on the fishes from that particular region vindicates the fisherfolks.
Speaking at a working tour with President Mahama at Edina in the Central Region, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Nayon Bilijo said “I’m happy to announce that since November last year, we have started testing fishes and so far the test has produced a negative result.”
“We want our fish to be healthy and consumers to have faith in our fish so we are assured that every fish we catch will be sold.”
