Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, Ken Kuranchie has insisted that despite being imprisoned for comments he made which were deemed contemptuous by the Supreme Court, he has no regrets about publishing that editorial.
Mr. Kuranchie was on Thursday released from the Nsawam prisons after serving a 10-day jail term.
The 9-member panel presiding over the hearing the election petition case convicted him for an editorial published by his paper in relation to the ban placed on the Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammy Awuku from making further appearances in court.
In an interview with Citi News
after his release, Mr. Kuranchie, who is also a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stated: “I do not regret my publication. If the opportunity came up again, I would make the same comparisons and raise the same issue.”
According to him, Ghanaians “ought to stand up for what they believe in. I ought to be allowed to express my opinion.”
He insisted that the treatment meted out to him was unfair and therefore suggested that after a verdict has been passed in the election petition case, “maybe we need to come back to some of these instances and see whether I was treated fairly because I believe I was not treated fairly. Then we will need to come back at some later date and examine.”
Mr. Kuranchie questioned the processes through which he was summoned and incarcerated.
“The court is not Justice Atuguba is driving in town and buys a newspaper. That is not the court. The court is not when Justice Akoto Banfo or Justice Baafo Bonney goes on Facebook…That is not the court. The court is when the nine Justices sit and somebody brings issues before the court. So who in that court room reported Daily Guide, who in that court room reported Sammy Awuku and reported Atubiga and reported me and reported Boamah? Who? Who reported Sir John? We ought to know because I have been accused and found guilty and sentenced into prison.”
