The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has said it has started paying arrears owed both private and public hospitals as well as the Mission Hospitals in five Regions.

The NHIA has been under fire recently for non-payment of arrears running into millions of Ghana cedis.

Speaking to Citi News, Communications Consultant to the NHIA, Eric Ametor Quarymne said the other Regions will be sorted by close of the week.

“We have done five regions and are continuing with the other five regions. Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Eastern, Greater Accra and Upper East regions have been done,” he stated.

Mr. Quarymne further stated, “We got a release from the Ministry last Monday and are working on it so that will be used to pay the remaining five regions. We are paying all the service providers.”

“There are three categories of them: private providers, government providers and the Christian Health Association of Ghana,” he added.

The National Health Insurance Scheme has come under fire as many major hospitals have refused to attend to card holders. This is because the hospitals claim the Authority owes them a lot of money and as such will not see to its cardholders.
