Following media reports that Medeama SC has sacked him from his post as head coach of the club, Tanko Shaibu has strongly reacted by saying the club is peddling falsehood about the situation.
According to the club, Shaibu was axed because of his lack of commitment to the post because of his work with the University College of Winneba (UCEW) as the sports coach but, in speaking to Citi Sports, the former Hearts of Oak assistant coach expressed his surprise and displeasure at the club’s stance.
“Albert Commey and I were both at Accra Hearts of Oak and he was aware that I doubled as the coach of the UCEW back then. It is very surprising to hear him say that he did not know that I was part of the University staff.”
“My status as staff helped him and the club when they came to the campus for their pre-season preparations. I managed to get Albert Commey and one Barri a room free of cost based on my relationship with the university.”
“How can they turn round and claim they do not know if my dealings with the university?”
Shaibu went on to add that he had still not received an official statement of his sacking from the club and he would wait to see any further development but he would stay away from his duties as head coach of the club.”
Meanwhile, Executive Vice-President of Medeama SC, Mr. Albert Commey has confirmed that Tanko is no more head coach of the club and he cited Tanko’s duties with the UCEW as the reason behind the decision to part Company with the coach.
“We are talking about a Premiership team that is at the top of the league and is vying for honours in the league and the other competitions like the MTN FA Cup. We know that the UCEW also has quite a busy schedule.”
“He was not available for our preparations for our game at Wa All Stars because he was up north with the university team. Things cannot work like this and that is why we have taken this step.”
“We believe that this decision will help him fully focus on the University.”
Mr. Commey added that the assistant coach Adotey and team manager, Ahmed Barry will be in charge of the team until further notice.
Before the club’s decision, Tanko Shaibu had taken over from Bashir Hayford following his move to AshantiGold after the first round of the Glo Premier League.
Medeama SC is on top of the Glo Premier League table after 17 matches with 31 points.
