Aggrieved consultants of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have called off their strike after a crunch meeting in Kumasi on Monday morning.

The Ministry of Health over the weekend announced that government has issued a cheque to pay the outstanding extra duty allowance that has been the bone of contention over the past three weeks.

According to the consultants, patients can now access total healthcare as junior doctors have also given the strongest indication that they will return to the wards if the consultants resume normal duties.

The consultants have been on strike for three weeks demanding nine months outstanding allowances.

Speaking to Citi News, the President of the junior doctors at KATH, Dr. Lawrence Osei- Tutu said the doctors are more than ready to return to work.

“Once they come, we are around and not on strike so when they come we will automatically start admitting new patients.”

The Public Relations officer of the MoH, Tony Goodman told Citi News the return of the consultants was agreed on when the ministry met with the representatives of the Ghana Medical Association and the Fair Wages Salaries Commission last Wednesday.

“They went through all the issues; raised some concerns and it came out clearly that you cannot be deriving two salaries from the Consolidated Funds,” he said.

“Currently we have released their first quarter allowances to the teaching hospitals to be paid to them.”
