The Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region, Comfort Asante, has cautioned traders in the area to desist from moving back onto the pavements and shoulders of the road to ply their trade.
According to her, the Assembly will not renege on its efforts to ensure sanity on the roads and promote the free flow of human and vehicular traffic.
In December 2017, the Municipal Assembly embarked on a decongestion exercise to rid the streets of hawkers who had set up illegal mini stalls and tables on the pavements to sell their wares within the Central Business District of Koforidua.
The exercise, which resulted in series of demonstrations by the traders led to some staff of the Assembly being physically assaulted.
Some of the traders had appealed to the MCE to allow them to sell on the streets during the Christmas festivities, and pledged to relocate to a newly constructed market.
However, most of them have failed to leave the streets after the Christmas festivities, creating inconveniences for pedestrians and motorists in the municipality.
Comfort Asante in a Citi News interview warned the traders to move back to the Agatha Market, which was allocated to them, warning that the Assembly will soon deploy city guards to forcibly move them from the streets to bring sanity to the Municipality.
