PSM reaches out to children street vendors on easter

As part of efforts to extend love and affection to child street vendors this Easter season and to gather data on their educational status, the Princess Sekyere Mission (PSM), a non-governmental organization, held its annual Easter Charity event at the Kaneshie Market in Accra.

The children who do not have the privilege to celebrate the day at lucrative recreational centers due to trading activities had a special treat of food, drinks and good music.

Activities of the some children briefly came to a halt when the PSM team occupied the main Kaneshie Post Office car park near the main market center as some jubilant young and old people cheered on to their favorite tunes.

Amidst merry making and interaction with the children, the event was also used to advise some market women who were in attendance to pay crucial attention to the education and welfare of their wards.

A patron of PSM and President of Rotary Club of Accra, Labone, Mrs. Mercy Osei-Konadu noted that dangers such as sexual abuse and other forms of domestic violence were increasing therefore children especially young girls must be bold to report any of such cases.

“Children are our future and we must do everything within our power to protect them. We must be concerned not only about our daily activities but we must also make time to ask of the very little issues which may be disturbing our children.” Mrs. Mercy Osei-Konadu said.

Ms. Princess Sekyere, reiterated the relevance of showing love to these children during seasons such as Easter as it connotes the essence of the season. She added that PSM is also concerned about the education and protection of these children therefore used the opportunity to collect data. The information is then shared with authorities such as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Social Welfare for with the intent to influence policy regarding children in the sub-metro.

She used the opportunity to thank Ghana Post Office for use of their venue and Champion Dishes for supporting the event.

Every child present at Saturday’s event was filled with excitement and a sense of gratitude. They exhibited their enthusiasm with hilarious scream and clap when it was time for dancing and competition. Many were determined to win the various completions organized but only a few were awarded for their outstanding performances.
