The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is alleging corruption in the recent rehabilitation works at the Kumasi International Airport.
The NPP says the amount government claims to have spent on the rehabilitation works has been bloated.
[contextly_sidebar id=”XEPFwhwMddStwcNSJfaaCkr3xPZHONoP”]The 29 million dollar rehabilitation project was inaugurated by President John Mahama last year to allow planes to take off and land at night.
But speaking to Citi News, the General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyapong believes the country has been short changed.
He explained that anybody with engineering knowledge will be able to detect that the cost of the project that does not merit the amount of work which was done at the Kumasi airport.
“What happened at the Kumasi airport was the rehabilitating the runway and that is the major cost component and then the issue of lightening at runway. That is a small airport and the length of the runway is 1.981 kilometers and it’s less than 2 kilometers. It doesn’t come anywhere close to the figures they are mentioning,” he remarked.
Mr. Agyapong pointed out that Anglogold Ashanti recently constructed a new airport in Obuasi with more physical infrastructure than that of the Kumasi airport.
That airport, he said would merit the $29 million being quoted as the cost for the Kumasi airport.
“I’m beginning to hear $29 million. With the volume of asphalt that was laid…it is nowhere near that and we will demand accountability,” he added.
